Progress report for 1st batch of 2020 season

As the 2020 gardening season kicks off, it’s time to reflect on the progress of our first batch of chilli plants. This year, we’ve put a lot of effort into preparing the soil, selecting the best seeds, and setting up optimal growing conditions to ensure a successful harvest.

Germination and Early Growth

We started the season with a mix of tried-and-true varieties and a few experimental ones. Week #3 at 85% germination – Cayenne Corto, Habanero Red, 7Pot Primo Red, Lemon Drop Aji and Bhut Jolokia all mostly up and running, while still waiting to Moruga Yellow, Carolina Reaper and Habanero White seedlings to start doing its thing…

Transplanting

Transplanting is always a critical step, and this year was no exception. The seedlings were moved to larger pots to accommodate their growing roots. We’ve been diligent about hardening off the plants, gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions to reduce transplant shock. So far, the plants are adapting well to their new environment.

Pest Management

Pest management has been relatively smooth this season. We’ve implemented a combination of organic pest control methods, including neem oil sprays and companion planting. This proactive approach has helped keep common pests like aphids and spider mites at bay, ensuring the plants remain healthy and vigorous.

Weather Challenges

The weather has been a bit unpredictable, with sudden temperature drops and heavy rains. However, our investment in protective structures like cloches and row covers has paid off, providing the plants with a stable environment. We’re closely monitoring weather forecasts and making necessary adjustments to protect the crops.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, the focus will be on maintaining optimal growing conditions and monitoring the plants for any signs of stress or disease. We’re particularly excited about the potential yield of our new varieties and will keep a close eye on their development.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses. We’re optimistic about the prospects of this first batch and look forward to sharing our successes and learning experiences with you.
