It’s that time of the year again. The garden may still be quiet, but indoors the planning has already begun. Seed packets are out, dried pods are being opened, notes from last season are spread across the table, it’s officially time to prepare for chilli sowing season 2026.

Before planting anything new, I always look back at the previous year.
Which varieties performed well?
Which handled the weather best?
Which delivered the flavour and heat I’m after?
Some earned a guaranteed spot again, reliable producers like Jalapeño and Habanero. Others, like Naga Morich, are back for the pure heat challenge. And of course, there’s always room to trial something new.
Careful notes make a huge difference. Germination rates, growth speed, yield, flavour profile, all of it helps shape better decisions for the coming season.
Seed Sorting and Selection
The real excitement begins when the seed envelopes come out.
Saved seeds from homegrown pods are sorted and labelled by year and variety. Freshly dried seeds are checked for size and quality. Everything gets organised properly — no mystery packets allowed this season.
Clear labelling is essential:
- Variety name
- Harvest year
- Heat level (if known)
- Any special notes
It saves confusion later and makes planning much easier.
Planning the 2026 Lineup
The goal is balance:
- 🌶 Mild to medium heat (Jalapeño-style varieties)
- 🔥 Classic superhots (Habanero types)
- 💀 Proper extreme heat (Naga and friends)
It’s tempting to grow too many varieties — every year I say I’ll scale back. Every year I don’t.
This season, I’m focusing on quality over quantity. Fewer plants, stronger growth, better care.
Timing the Sowing
For strong, healthy plants, timing matters.
Starting seeds indoors early gives chillies the long growing season they need. Good light, steady warmth, and patience are key. Superhots especially need extra time to mature, so they’re always first in the sowing queue.
A proper start means:
- Consistent warmth (around 25–28°C for germination)
- Moist but not waterlogged soil
- Good airflow once seedlings appear
The stronger the start, the better the harvest.
Chilli Seed-Starting Checklist
Before you begin sowing, run through this quick checklist to give your chillies the best possible start:
✅ Seeds & Planning

✅ Equipment
- ☐ Seed trays or small pots
- ☐ Quality seed-starting mix (light and well-draining)
- ☐ Plant labels (no guessing later!)
- ☐ Humidity dome or plastic cover
- ☐ Heat mat (ideal for 25–28°C germination)
- ☐ Grow light or bright window space
✅ Sowing Process
- ☐ Lightly moisten soil before planting
- ☐ Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep
- ☐ Keep soil warm and consistently moist (not soaked)
- ☐ Ensure good airflow once seedlings emerge
✅ After Germination
- ☐ Remove humidity cover
- ☐ Provide strong light immediately
- ☐ Avoid overwatering
